Unless you are a true coffee connoisseur, the title of this article may have you wondering is there really a blend of coffee bean with such a long and distinguished sounding name? There is, and this type of premium Jamaican coffee delivers a unique flavor that justifies its reputation - and its name.

Wallenford estate coffee is grown in the Blue Mountain region of Jamaica, which is located in the eastern part of the Caribbean island. The climactic conditions of this region are ideal for growing a premium coffee bean. Coffee grown at high altitudes is always sought after, and the Blue Mountains of Jamaica reach a peak of 7400 feet, making Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee one of the highest grown in the world.

Another distinguishing factor about this climate is the fog that shrouds the plants every day, causing them to mature more slowly than average. This makes the process of growing and harvesting the beans slower and more labor intensive than anywhere else. Finally, the coffee is shipped in basswood barrels, rather than in the burlap bags used everywhere else. Blue Mountain Wallenford Estate is one of the rarest and most expensive coffee beans in the world. This light-medium roast coffee is prized for its low acidity, rich taste and pleasing aroma.

Because of the renown of Blue Mountain coffee, it is important to know that you are getting the real thing. There are many cheaper Jamaican coffees on the market. Some are even quite good, but they don’t compare with Blue Mountain. To ensure that standards are met, the Jamaican Coffee Industry Board must approve and certify all Blue Mountain coffee. This approval is by no means a mere formality given to all coffee producers; standards are rigorously enforced to preserve the integrity of Jamaica’s truly premium coffees.

Just as all Jamaican coffee is not Blue Mountain, not all Blue Mountain coffee is Wallenford estate, which has long been considered the best of the best of Jamaican coffee. Jamaican Blue Mountain Wallenford Estate coffee is rightfully one of the most prized in the world.

Coffee Glossary

Wallenford Estate. At one time the most celebrated and best of Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee. Now simply any Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee from the Wallensford mill.

Washed Coffee also Wet-Processed Coffee.

Wet-Processed Coffee, Wet Method Coffee, Washed Coffee. Coffee prepared by removing the skin and pulp from the bean while the coffee fruit is still moist. Most of the world’s great coffees are processed by the wet method, which generally intensifies acidity. In the traditional wet process, the coffee skins are removed (pulping), the skinned beans are allowed to sit in tanks where enzymes loosen the sticky fruit pulp or mucilage (fermentation), after which the loosened fruit is washed off the beans (washing). In the shortcut demucilage or aquapulp method, the pulp or mucilage is scrubbed from the beans by machine.

Whole-Bean Coffee. Coffee that has been roasted but not yet ground.

Plain coffee is fast becoming a thing of the past. It’s now quite simple to whip up a gourmet hot beverage for guest, family, or just for yourself. Nowadays there are a number of coffee clubs and circles in which coffee drinking has become somewhat of a social club. These social clubs meet in the community or on the Internet.

Where did the good old days go where you could get just a regular, good cup of coffee all across America.

It’s all because there is a big craze over coffee these days. People are almost worshipping the coffee bean now. People get a thrill out of ordering and buying special coffees from specialty stores. They really like grinding their own coffee beans. They like visiting places such as Costa Rica and bringing back their special blends. And “coffee tasting” seems to be about as popular as “wine tasting”.

They even have furniture and home interior designs with a coffee theme. This would make great gifts for the coffee buff.

Coffee got its beginnings around 900 A.D. where it was at first used as a stimulant. It was also at times used as a wine and a medicine. It doesn’t look like anything is much different today.

There are not many products such as coffee that have continued “as is” for hundreds of years. And yet people are still scrutinizing and getting creative with it today and probably will be for years to come.

What is also interesting is that coffee is second to oil in dollar volume as a world commodity.

Did you know that there is two times more caffeine in a pound of tea than in the same amount of roasted coffee? This may be good news for those of you who hate the taste of decaffeinated coffee however wait just one moment. A pound of tea will make about 160 cups whereas a pound of coffee will usually make about 40 cups. This means that a cup of tea has about 1/4th the caffeine of a cup of coffee.

The content of caffeine in coffee decreases as it is grown at higher altitudes. If you want less caffeine in your coffee, grow it higher. Gourmet coffees are typically grown at higher altitudes so they have less caffeine than their grocery store counterparts.

There are many different types of coffee beans and way too many to describe in this article. Here are just a few of them:

You have Latte, Espresso, Low-Fat, Organic, Cal, Decaf, Half-Decaf, Black Forest, Cappuccino, Cafe au Lait, Alpine which has brown sugar, Arabian (lightly spiced and without filter), Cafe con Miel (Spanish for coffee with honey), and Cafe de Olla (a sweet coffee made with chocolate).

And you really should attend a coffee tasting at least once. You will get to experience how making and brewing gourmet coffee is slowly becoming a form of art. What is fun about the coffee tasting is that you could get a chance to taste two dozen or more different blends. You may even leave to start your journey as a coffee connoisseur. Any way you look at it, the tasting experience will be fun if you like coffee.

There has been so much confusion about *coffee beans* and their purpose. First of all, it is a natural bean plant having many purposes much like a tomato does!

You slice your tomato and eat it on your burger, but did you know that a tomato contains nicotine?

I didn’t make the tomato, but I sure enjoy eating them! It’s the same way with coffee beans, except I wouldn’t want them on my burger! I do, however, enjoy a cup of espresso now and then ( and when no one is looking I even have some of my favorite “flavored coffee” too ). No harm in that or a cup of regular coffee. It’s the use of the bean we are looking at here, it’s design and purpose. Coffee beans have many medicinal purposes from skin to bone and must be used with caution and balance as with all things medicinal. Coffee beans are essentially a natural diuretic, cleansing your body, curbing your appetite as well as providing a rejuvenating boost! Did I mention flavorful? Oh yes coffee can have the richest flavor along with an added zest of spice, natural flavored syrup and exotic flavored as well.

Too much coffee can actually add to the cause of bone density loss and should be used sparingly, especially by elders. Children under the age of 16 should avoid caffeinated drinks as their bones are still developing. TCoffee beans have made a real come back after much deliberation and auspicious news reports. Coffee beans have survived!

In fact they are thriving where ever they are grown and delivered. Families and workaholics all around the world are enjoying them! If you want to thrive, there is no question that coffee can help you go that extra mile - a big plus for the good flavored coffee. If you want to loose weight (be it all fruit diet or something else), it can aid you in appetite control. There are optimized coffee’s designed specifically for weight loss and if you simply want to enjoy it… well let me tell you it can be the most flavorful and enjoyable drink!

Did you know that coffee beans can aid healing? Yes, absolutely they can. How? They can absorb and help extract infected matter in the skin! What? Oh yes… done properly with a heat compress with ground coffee beans, infection can be pulled right out of the skin. It is, however, a great medicinal tool, dietary aid and energizer!

I’m not talking about the bunny, though he is real cute! I am talking about you and your use of coffee beans. What they can do for you as well as what to watch for health wise.

Go ahead and give a toast to your favorite flavor beverage, whether it is juice, tea or coffee! Going to get a cup of coffee right now so that I can toast with you - to your health and well being. Coffee beans definitely have their place on the planet. And in my cupboard, too! Now, I don’t want to over emphasize coffee bean use, but I do want you to be in the know regarding its many uses. If the need arises medically or you simply desire a little aid with appetite control, if you enjoy coffee as a morning thing or even a kick in the afternoon, well, it is certainly available. It is in high demand and supply.

Flavors are plentiful from natural cinnamon to vanilla bean berry and beyond! Yes, flavored coffee can have it’s own unique flavor and taste in accordance to your own desires! Shall the coffee lovers of the world celebrate? Most definitely. A toast to you and yours.

HOW MANY CUPS OF COFFEE PER POUND?

It sounds like an easy question: How many cups of coffee can you brew from one pound of whole beans? The question is simple, it’s just the answer that gets a little complicated! It would be much easier if everyone had the same idea about the size of a cup?

Premium connoisseur peaberry coffee

Do you mean one of those dainty after-dinner coffee cups? Or maybe one of those big caffe-latte cups? Or a coffee mug even? And how much coffee do you put in the coffee maker? Do you add a little extra for a stronger cup of coffee?

No accurate answer, because we all use different cups. But here’s a guideline for you, assuming you use an average sized cup. For each pound of whole coffee beans, you can expect to brew 30-40 cups of coffee.

Gourmet Coffees Cost Only Pennies Per Cup for Premium Coffee When Brewed at Home.

Gourmet Coffee drinkers have become accustomed to paying $2 or more per cup for fresh brewed coffees at Premium coffee houses and many sources are predicting those prices may increase to as much as $4 per cup soon due to expected increases in green coffee prices.

Smart gourmet coffee consumers have long known that premium coffee brewed at home costs just 12 cents or less per cup. It’s also a good idea to make sure that you are using the right ratio of coffee beans to water for your favorite brew.

Many coffee producers recommend starting with 1 tablespoon of fresh ground gourmet coffee beans per standard 6 ounce cup of water. Starbucks recommends double that amount for stronger coffees at 2 tablespoons per 6 ounce cup.

A pound of gourmet coffee divided by 1 1/2 Ounces comes to roughly 10 pots of 10 cups (6 Ounce cups) equaling 100 cups for the cost of one pound of gourmet coffee beans. Be sure to check the size of the bag of coffee if you’re buying it from a supermarket. With all of the downsizing, it’s best to double check because the coffee manufactures don’t always mention when they change the amount of the contents.

At the average of 1.5 tablespoons per 6 ounce cup and average size of 12 ounce coffee mug, you can expect 50 cups of home brewed coffee per pound of gourmet beans!

Prices of premium gourmet beans range between $12 and $18 per pound, making a cup of home-brewed gourmet coffee, made fresh to your liking, cost only between .12 cents and .25 cents per cup! Really sharp shoppers are buying in bulk.

Even the rarest and most expensive coffee sold, the exotic Kopi Luwak, at $175 per pound, is still less than $1.75 per cup when brewed at home!

Gourmet coffee consumers rarely consider the cost of their daily coffee in terms of how much it would cost to brew at home with prices of a pound of gourmet coffee beans versus a three cup a day coffee drinking habit at premium coffee house prices.

It is wise to be smart not only about coffee. Thinking about fruit diet weight loss - read more.

If you count the number of places that serve up coffee and espresso every morning, then it is clear that many people need that caffeinated shot to get going and to get the energy they need to start their day off right. Obviously, with the number of coffee houses around, there are lots of folks who get their espressos there, while others simply choose to make it at home, thanks to an espresso coffee maker that is sitting in their kitchen.

Many of us are currently feeling the pinch and attempting to tighten the belts with cheap recipes, but we also know we need a proper cup of coffee to get going and understand having our own coffee machine will save money in the long run. If you have decided that it is time to bring espresso equipment into your home so that you can start making your own and have it any time that you get a hankering for it, then you will need to get familiar with the types of home espresso machines that are on the market these days. With the popularity of all kinds of coffee drinks, including espresso and cappuccino, it should not be surprising to learn that there is a huge assortment of espresso coffee makers to choose from.

As people begin researching espresso equipment to make a purchase, they are often are surprised to find out that there are eight different kinds of espresso coffee maker models. Not all of these espresso machines are widely available outside of Europe, but it can be helpful to be aware of them, in order to understand the origins of espresso making.

The stovetop espresso maker could be considered to be the original espresso machine. If you travel to Italy, Portugal or Spain, you will most likely find one of these stovetop models in just about every home that you might visit. These stovetop machines have three distinct chambers, each with a different purpose.

The top chamber holds the freshly ground coffee, the middle chamber functions as a filter, and the lower chamber is where the water is heated. As the water heats up in the stovetop espresso machine, the steam is forced to go up a tube to the top chamber and the steam then permeates the grounds, which in turn produces the espresso.

The steam espresso maker is similar to the stovetop model, in that most of these types are also heated up on the stovetop, but the internal workings are somewhat different. Another type of espresso coffee machines is the piston-drive model that is operated by the steam. This type of espresso equipment tends to be much more expensive and therefore, not as widely used. However, it was the piston-drive Italian espresso maker that was responsible for the introduction of cream in the espresso, which has become a standard for many people.

When it comes to an electric espresso coffee maker, there are five different types that you can choose from. There is the fully manual style, the semi-automatic style, the automatic style, the super-automatic style, and the fully automatic style. More and more people are opting for the fully automatic version because it has a water line running to it and with the push of just one button you can quickly and easily be enjoying your morning espresso in no time.

Coffee makers have been around, not surprisingly, almost as long as coffee. The original coffee brewer was the Turkish Ibrik, a copper container with a long handle and a grooved tongue. Still used in the Middle East, it produces a very strong brew since it does not filter the coffee.

For those amongst you who prefer to drink your coffee rather than eat it, there are a wide variety of types machines available from the plain to the esoteric. Here are a few things to look for…

The largest selection of automatic coffee makers these days is, of course, the inexpensive drip model. You start by pouring water into the top of the machine, it is then heated by an electrical coil, once hot the water passes through fresh coffee grounds and into a glass pot sitting on a hot plate.

But beyond these basics, there are a few features it’s useful to have.

Controls have proliferated to the level that many machines look like a modern stereo. LCD screens display the time, the time to brew, temperature, a timer and several options even more unmentionable .

Have you ever forgotten to shut your coffee machine off and it has overflowed all over your kitchen bench or you have been unable to wait until it has finished brewing and you have had drips all over the hot plate. If this is you then you will find the auto shut-off feature very useful. As soon as you lift the pot off the hot plate the machine stops brewing.

Today you can control every aspect of your coffee brewing experience. Many modern machines let you select the strength of the coffee you desire, along with what time you want the brew to start, so it can be ready when you wake-up, presuming you remember to set it up the night before!

Everyone loves the smell of coffee, and it is very comforting to come down into your kitchen on a dark, cold morning and smell the fresh brewing coffee as well as seeing the little illuminated display telling you your coffee is ready.

Cleaning has been made better, too, by the development of coffee ‘pods’ - small pre-measured paper containers of coffee through which the water flows. They have the added blessing of providing good filtering for grounds. Once the brewing is complete you just pop them out (after they’ve cooled!) and toss them into the waste basket. Essential for the busy - and adverse to cleaning up - coffee drinker.

Several models are available with water filters, essential for the urban dweller where the city supply often tastes like the community swimming pool. The filters are pricey but a good cup of coffee is priceless.

Permanent filtered coffee styles can be had, but with the pods they’re much less important. Debates rage over the environmental impact and the taste effect of the paper from the pods. Vote with your conscience.

With so many brands to chose from and a bevy of coffee machines available it may seem like an impossible task to finally decide on your faultless coffee maker. But you can take pleasure in that fact the once you have chosen you can enjoy your perfect cup of coffee whenever your want for a long time to come.

If you love chocolate – and who doesn’t – the holiday season is ripe with opportunities to work in a chocolate break. Chocolate makes a delicious Chocolate Gift of many faces and forms. Just because it tastes so wonderful is no reason for guilt. Recent studies have confirmed that chocolate is good for your heart, so if anyone tries to make you feel guilty, simply point your finger to that fact. Then, invite your accuser to join you in a healthful treat.

There’s simply nothing like a good chocolate concoction. Chocolate is good for breakfast, lunch or dinner. A chocolate croissant is the perfect accompaniment to a morning cup of coffee. A brownie is a wonderful ending to lunch. Chocolate truffles are elegant after-dinner treats. There is one Chocolate & Wine Gift that seems right at any time of the day, as a pick-me-up, a snack or unctuous evening dessert. This would be chocolate fudge.

If you “google” chocolate fudge, you’ll get millions of results, attesting to the popularity of this just dessert. Everyone’s got a recipe for this versatile goodie, all of which you may find tempting.

Chocolate fudge brings back memories of Grandma’s house at Christmas time, with a big tin of little squares of fudge just waiting to be popped into your mouth, savored and melted with a sigh of great enjoyment.

It seems everyone’s Mom or Grandma has the very best fudge recipe. That doesn’t mean there’s not room for experimentation and new discoveries of chocolate heaven.

Among the basic chocolate fudge ingredients are chocolate (duh!), butter, cream and perhaps sugar if you’re using baking chocolate. It’s the add-ons that personalize your fudge, making your chocolate fudge sing in the memory of your appreciative recipients.

Add-ons make your fudge distinctive. Try integrating nuts, such as crushed almonds, pecans or walnuts. Get flamboyant with some marshmallow creme. A bit of quality, high cocoa butter chocolate can make your fudge extraordinary. Just a couple tablespoons of liqueur, such as Kahlua, rum or Orange Marnier mixed in with the batch can produce a mysterious and intriguing chocolate fudge, made all your own with a little experimentation and imagination.

Along with a “couverture” quality chocolate, heavy cream lends a sensuous, rich texture and flavor to your chocolate fudge. Butter adds calories, it’s true, but the taste overcomes any prudish or guilty complexion to the Chocolate Basket.

Presentation is the final gilding of the lily. Party stores sell small gold and silver foiled cups to hold the treasured treat. Once prepared, cut the chocolate fudge into tiny bite-sized pieces, set in the foil cups and box them up. Surely you’ll have no refusals.

As the coffee industry shifts toward fair trade practices and organic certification, more farmers are switching from mere flavored and gourmet coffees to organic and sustainable practices. But, what does that mean, and how does it affect the actual coffee? For answers to these questions and tips on where you can find gourmet organic coffee, keep reading.

What Does Organic Mean?

Organic coffee typically indicates it has been certified by the USDA and meets their stringent growing and harvesting standards for organic certification. Therefore, coffee that has been certified as organic has been farmed using methods that have a minimal impact on the environment and little to no reliance on chemical or unnatural methods.

Because coffee is harvested as a seed, buying organic has little-to-no health effects for the consumer. However, purchasing an organic coffee bean means you’re supporting environmentally friendly and sustainable farming methods.

Ethical or Fair Trade Purchasing

Fair trade certification focuses on the labor practices of the coffee farmer and manufacturer. By purchasing fair trade coffee, you’re supporting a trade standard that gives small-industry grower co-ops a standard price for their coffee.

While fair trade doesn’t carry the same environmental standards as organic certification, they do ban the use of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) and most pesticides.

Who Makes Organic Coffee?

Green Mountain Coffee Company

The Green Mountain Coffee Company is based out of Vermont and is one of the country’s largest organic and fair trade coffee suppliers. They currently do the bulk of their business as a supplier for office and workplace coffee needs, including K-Cups and instant coffee machines.

Gloria Jean’s Coffee

As a roaster and supplier of 100 percent organic, fair trade coffee, this Australian coffee roaster was awarded the Corporate Green Globe Award by the prestigious Rainforest Alliance.

They sell a range of coffees and roasts while fulfilling their commitment to ethical environmental and social business practices.

Jim’s Organic Coffee

Jim’s Organic Coffee makes a range of blends and roasts that are certified organic and fair trade. The company also sells a Rainforest blend that is shade grown and certified by the Rainforest Alliance. This means the farming methods used to cultivate the coffee don’t destroy natural habitats or the existing rainforest ecosystem around the plantation.

Starbucks

Starbucks, a major coffee retailer all over the world, carries three kinds of organic coffee. They stock their Shade Grown Mexican, Organic Serena Blend and their own Organic Sumatra-Peru blend.

What is the first thing you want to grab when you get up in the morning? Majority of people will say “a hot cup of coffee. And when they think about coffee shops, the first thing that comes in their minds is Starbucks – the undisputable leader in the coffee industry. In fact, the celebrated company can be credited for spreading the idea of turning coffee shops into places to hang out over a cup of coffee! Now, it is recognized as the biggest coffee chain in the world, with 7 stores opening daily worldwide! The organization also encouraged others to enter the market and today Americans can choose from a number of well-known coffee franchises for having their morning or any time coffee.

If you are passionate about your cup of coffee and want to join the franchising business as well, think about the various coffee franchising concepts present in the United States. You might be apprehensive about the profitability of your new venture due to the incredible popularity of the market leader. But, you need not worry! Actually, few coffee franchises fear Starbucks, because it doesn’t franchise! So, people who are interested in coffee franchises opt for other leading names in this category of franchising business. Another thing that goes against the market leader is that Starbucks is considered high end. Some recent incidents have also made people complain about the services offered in the chains. Hence, most people are turning to coffee shops that provide good ambiance and a greater value for their money.

Take for example “Jazzman’s Coffee” (http://coffee-franchises.brandexpansion.com/jazzmans-cafe/). Franchising since 2004, it is fast emerging as a favorite hang-out place for young crowds – just like “Central Perk” in the serial “F.R.I.E.N.D.S”! If you like people to come and chat in your shop over a gourmet cup of coffee, you can try “Arabica Coffee House” (http://coffee-franchises.brandexpansion.com/arabica-coffee-house/) whereas if you want one with low overhead costs, try “Java Grande” drive-through (http://coffee-franchises.brandexpansion.com/java-grande/). “Mocha Delight” (http://coffee-franchises.brandexpansion.com/mocha-delites/) is another coffee franchise that is undergoing vast expansion, thanks to its excellent services and unique blends of coffees. Some other rising stars in this field are “Zizzo’s Coffee” (http://coffee-franchises.brandexpansion.com/zizzos-coffee/), “Maui Wowi Hawaiian Coffee and Smoothie” (http://coffee-franchises.brandexpansion.com/maui-wowi-hawaiian-coffee-and-smoothies/) and “Sonoma Coffee Café” (http://coffee-franchises.brandexpansion.com/sonoma-coffee-cafe/).
